The Circle Line is one of the largest rail infrastructure projects undertaken in Singapore and is being built in stages. Stage 3, featuring four HASSELL-designed stations at Bartley, Serangoon, Lorong Chuan and Marymount, opened in May 2009. The line will encircle the CBD, interconnecting existing lines throughout the city, and linking the CBD with the outlying suburbs of Singapore.
The dramatic entrance canopies allow extensive use of natural day light throughout the underground stations. The strong, elegant design incorporates simple, unambiguous circulation on concourse and platform areas, a robust palette of materials to accommodate heavy wear and tear, and a vibrant overlay of signage and public art to animate the public realm.
The HASSELL design meets some of the world’s most stringent engineering requirements, while providing a strong architectural design and urban response appropriate to a major transit facility. Stringent civil defence requirements were also met, including the provision at three of the stations to shelter large numbers of people in the event of a major emergency.
