Wentworth Common at Sydney Olympic Parklands has been transformed into an area of play which invites curiosity, introduces the notion of a journey and inspires adventure.
The play sequence is composed as an origami-like insert placed into an existing Melaleuca forest.
Interweaving sinuous lines and curved walls - like concrete ribbons - form a number of clearings in the forest, the setting for three large multi-functional play structures.
A series of paths draw users into, through and beyond the playground. These passages offer a rich, varied experience and propose a sense of discovery.
A watery necklace - part string of ponds - is laced among the play elements.
A series of finely crafted timber boxes unfold. These elements were constructed to provide a clear point of contrast to the forest structure and the playgrounds spatial composition. The boxes mark the entry, provide vantage points and create stages for informal play and congregation.
The use of materials throughout the composition explored the concept of contrasting textures. Over time the materials - concrete, timber and stone - will develop a patina that traces the playground's history and pattern of use.
