'The Birds' was inspired by the rich and varied bird life of the Sydney Olympic Parklands.

A cable is suspended over a pond and playground, on it balances a series of sculptures which take on the shape of abstracted birds in flight. The light shapes pivot and rock in the breeze.

'The Birds' have many characters; sometimes popping their heads over the foliage (when viewed from grass on the central common) and at times completely disappearing into it (viewed from the bay marker).  'The Birds' was designed to be subtle and changeable, having different characters on different days - sometimes serious and shy, sometimes boisterous and fun.
