A building that gathers people together is the new home of HASSELL in Brisbane. The former Keating's Bread Factory building has been extensively refurbished to create a suite of open-plan, interconnected studio and gathering spaces. The move to this campus-style building in Fortitude Valley reinforces HASSELL design philosophies and reflects the studio's strong position in the marketplace. The studio project builds on initiatives explored in other HASSELL studios - creating collaborative studio environments with social hubs that facilitate interaction.

A new pavilion building on the eastern edge of the site creates a civic entry sequence and colonnaded courtyard. The central courtyard is the symbolic and physical gathering space for the studio, an architectural device for organisation and orientation. It is the venue for memorable events. Visually this idyllic, captured landscape amplifies the outdoor condition of the interior. The rebuilding work continues a lineage of brick structures on the garrulous site. Evolving over time, the existing envelope is a montage of additions, each one owing a material and formal debt to the previous. Respecting this precedent of integration and evolution, bricks have been used to mend the existing and create new buildings, structures and thresholds, visually and physically binding old and new.
